+ SUPPORTING OH MERCY IN SYDNEY & MELBOURNE

Melbourne’s Pearls have today released the new video for album title track ‘Pretend You’re Mine’. The track is lifted from their debut album Pretend You’re Mine which was released worldwide in February 2015 via Dot Dash / Remote Control Records.
Of the clip the band’s Cassandra Kiely (vocals/keyboard) says:

“The first spark of inspiration for the clip came by way of a hazy hangover, with the girls watching the Marc Bolan TV show in bed after a night out. It was the perfect comedown, Bolan in his bright pink satin suit, struttin around singing ‘Ride A White Swan’. The ladies adored the visuals and wanted to replicate that kind of sleazy, 70’s, tongue in cheek feel. The boys agreed and thus, the concept was put to Nicky White; director and close friend of the band. Nicky loved the idea of making a set in homage to the show and we roped in a bunch of darlings to help make it happen. Alden Epp stars in the clip as our bands mascot, the Pearls angel glitter baby! Nicky really did the rest, he ran wild with the concept and we are so happy with how it turned out. If you look closely you can see a white swan in the film clip for Pretend You’re Mine. Its our little ode to the wizard of glam, he ain’t no square with his corkscrew hair, the one and only Marc Bolan!”

Melbourne three-piece Pearls formed in 2011 and since have made shimmering sounds that float above their peers. In their time as a band Pearls have supported the likes of Kurt Vile, Marnie Stern, Sons & Daughters, and a myriad of local bands including Crime and City Solution, Sunbeam Sound MachineTotal ControlNew War. In 2013 Pearls released a split 7” on Glaswegian label RE:PEATER Records and recorded a cover of The Standells’ ‘Dirty Water’ for an Australian 40th Anniversary Nuggets compilation. Pearls’ self-titled debut EP was full of reverb-drenched, ethereal vocals and a hefty dose of beautiful noise.

Pearls will join Oh Mercy as main support on their upcoming ‘Sandy’ Single Launch Tour playing Sydney on Wednesday April 22nd at the Newtown Social Club and in Melbourne on Saturday 25th April at The Gasometer.

Say Lou Lou Announce Debut Album Lucid Dreaming

Say Lou Lou Announce Debut Album Lucid Dreaming Released Friday 10 April

SAY LOU LOU are Australian/Swedish siblings, twin sisters Miranda Anna and Elektra June Kilbey-Jansson (who coincidentally are the daughters of Steve Kilbey, The Church), they create a beautiful Indie synth pop sound and they will be releasing their debut album Lucid Dreaming in Australia on April 10 via À Deux Records / The Orchard.

Say Lou Lou arrived in chuck’s ears mid last year with album opener Everything We Touch, a stunning slice of Synth Pop heaven, and their new single Nothing But a Heartache makes me think we’re all destined for repetitive strain injury from hitting Play again, and again.

‘NOTHING BUT A HEARTBEAT’

Following a year spent touring the globe, gathering huge momentum and setting the internet alight with every release, the twin sisters – who grew up in both Australia and Sweden – recorded their stunning debut in Los Angeles, London and Sweden. Working with the likes of Liam Howe (FKA Twigs, Foxes), Hannah Robinson (Icona Pop, Lana Del Rey) and Jim Eliot (Ellie Goulding), the finished record is a beautifully crafted and elegant body of work.

SAY LOU LOU control every aspect of this project – the lyrics, the music videos, the styling, the artwork and all aesthetics involved. The video for their current single ‘Nothing But A Heartbeat’, was devised by the band and directed by Joanna Nordahl (The XX, Lune, Ji Nilsson). In it, we see the band in a dream-like state, surrealistic and boundless with abstract thoughts running free, bringing the album’s title Lucid Dreaming truly to life. Look out for the video very soon.

Lucid Dreaming will be available on all digital platforms and in all good record stores Australia-wide from April 12, 2015 via À Deux Records / The Orchard.

ROSIE LOWE Shares ‘How’d You Like It’ Video

ROSIE LOWE Shares ‘How’d You Like It’ Video

rosie lowe

Dazed & Confused have named British vocalist Rosie Lowe in their Dazed 100 – the prestigious list that celebrates visual pioneers, fashion prodigies and musical mavericks redefining creativity in 2015 and beyond. A fitting description then, and one that is reflected with Rosie’s striking new video for current single ‘How’d You Like It’ taken from her forthcoming debut album due next year via Dew Process/Universal Music Australia.

A visceral document of human intimacy set against the experimental technology of reflective yarn, the beautifully shot video expresses the tension and restrictions imposed on relationships.
Watch it here: http://po.st/HYLIv
Directed by Us who said of the clip: “We had been experimenting with reflective yarn for over a year and felt this track was the perfect fit. It’s an amazing material that illuminates when hit with a small LED light – basically the same yarn used in cycling clothing that lights up under car lights. Using Rosie’s lyrics as a starting point we started to investigate the connections between people, whether that’s the tension between two people or simply isolation.”

Rosie Lowe first captured hearts in the UK last year when her debut EP ‘Right Thing’ was released to unanimous acclaim, and now, she takes her music to the world. The release follows a string of recent festival appearances, including Meltdown Festival, The Great Escape, Secret Garden Party, End of The Road and Bestival. Rosie will play Annie Mac Presents at London’s ICA on 10 December and has been announced as support for Neneh Cherry‘s UK tour in January.

Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders Releases Video For ‘Her Hands’

“Her Hands” from standout 2014 album ‘Playmates’ by Jack Ladder now has a video.

Jack Ladder

Watch the clip here.

This one’s one to file under “What the hell were they on, and can I have some.” it’s a strange and uncomfortable trip watching voyeur-like as these two chase each other around the stunning corridors of Sydney Town Hall. I have to admit, i had to watch it twice to see if the blonde was a bloke!

The video was directed by Steve Rogers, who won an Australian Director’s Guild Award in 2012 for another Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders video, “Cold Feet”. The Director Of Photography is Oscar winner Russel Boyd (who won his award for Peter Weir’s Master And Commander’ in 2003) and it also stars high profile actor Hamish Michael (Crownies, The Great Gatsby). The video was shot in the grand 19th century neo-Classical corridors (with French Second Empire elements, architecture buffs) of Sydney Town Hall.

After two sold out album launches in Sydney and Melbourne, ‘Playmates’ is looking to be one of the most acclaimed Australian albums of 2014. It’s been being awarded Album Of The Week status on Double J, 3RRR, 2SER and FBi, and was awarded number 17 on Double J’s Top 50 Album’s of the Year List, as well as being nominated by FBi as one of the Albums of the Year in their SMAC Awards. This is in addition to a raft of glowing reviews across local music media.

Legendary US label Fat Possum (The Black Keys, Townes Van Zandt, Rowland S Howard) will release the album in North America, Latin America and Japan in February, and there are plans afoot to tour the US in 2015.

CIVIL CIVIC Play Melbourne & Sydney This Week

civil civic

Described as “Ear shattering genius” by NME and “Like being caught in the eye of an adrenalin storm” by Mixmag, CIVIL CIVIC have been frightening and motivating European audiences with their unique brand of euphorically melodic post-punk scuzz since forming there in 2009.

Since The Drones selected them for the All Tomorrows Party in Melbourne, 2012, Civil Civic (originally from Melbourne) have not set foot on native soil, so expect some real electricity from their already notorious live shows.

Despite working relentlessly on album no.2, (the follow up to the highly praised debut LP RULES) CIVIL CIVIC are making space for some select club shows in Australia this December.

Don’t miss this chance to catch one of Europe’s hottest festival acts in a small club environment.

SUNBEAM SOUND MACHINE DEBUT ALBUM WONDERER + ANNOUNCE EAST COAST ALBUM TOUR

Sunbeam Sound Machine, aka dream-pop multi-instrumentalist Nick Sowersby has premiered his debut album Wonderer ahead of it’s official worldwide release this Friday 21st November.

sunbeamS.M.

Wonderer is now available for pre-order via iTunes and also on limited edition vinyl via bandcamp which includes incredible album artwork by Melbourne’s Jason Galea. After announcing a Melbourne album launch last week Sunbeam Sound Machine are excited to announce today the addition of Sydney and Brisbane show dates to fill out an east coast album launch tour.

Sunbeam Sound Machine is the brainchild of talented Melbourne multi-instrumentalist Nick Sowersby who writes and records in the sanctity of his garage in Collingwood, Sowersby was recently awarded a highly coveted Australia Council ‘New Works’ Recording Grant to help fund the creation of his debut LP release.
The album was written, recorded and produced by Nick in his Collingwood home. He has enlisted the incredible musical brain of Stu Mackenzie (King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard) to mix the record and talented Melbourne based producer, Andrei Eremin (Chet Faker, Oscar Key Sung, Banoffee) to master the album. The contribution by these two completely different yet equally magnificent musical talents has provided a rich and sweeping depth of sound to his already heavily layered pop music.

BIS ‘THE ANTHOLOGY – 20 YEARS OF ANTISEPTIC POETRY’ Released Nov 10 2014.

Celebrating 20 years since their formation, Glasgow trio bis release a double cd collection featuring music from the last two decades including brand new songs and previously unreleased live tracks. Out 10th November on Do Yourself In Records via Cargo, the album ‘The Anthology – 20 Years of Antiseptic Poetry’ includes brand new tracks including ‘Keep Your Darkness’. After splitting in 2003 the band have come back together a few times, more noticeably this year when they released a collection of ‘lost tracks’ named ‘data Panik etcetera’ for Record Store Day and recently played at the Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremonies – “Mix-Tape on Glasgow Green”, which was curated by Chemikal Underground.

What follows is a lavishly produced compilation of hits, misses, rarities and exclusives – ‘The Anthology – 20 Years of Antiseptic Poetry’ – and expanded, re-mastered deluxe editions of ‘The New Transistor Heroes’, ‘Social Dancing’ and ‘Return To Central’.

These releases round up the past of bis, remind us of the present of bis and hint at the future of bis. The history of the future and the future of history. With a disco heartbeat.

Review: Jezabels – The Brink

Artist: Jezabels

Album: The Brink

Label: Self Release / MGM

Date: 2014

Rating: 77 / 100

Sophomore releases by bands whose first albums become successful beyond expectations are generally confronted by reviewers with a raised bar. Couple that with the fact that The Brink is like a new pillow that takes a while to sink in and feel right and a quick review becomes a hazy mirage in the distance.

That being said (or written, for the pedantics) there are only two bars that need to be cleared. Does it step forward from the first release and does it artistically presage a third?

The Brink delivers on both fronts and although the immediacy of their first album (Prisoner – 2011) is missing here, we find the Jezabels in a more slow burning and at times smouldering mood. Their expanded soundscape perhaps in parts as a result of finding themselves in depressed limbo after a gruelling year of touring and recording in London with producer Don Grech-Marguerat whose resume includes Radiohead, Kooks and Lana Del Ray.

Brooding vocals and at times almost sinister soft instrumentation give way to scowling indie pop – rock, the type that forces your feet to tap and makes people who don’t like dance music get up and dance. The Brink, Look of Love, The End and Got Velvet exemplify this while tracks like No Country and Psychotherapy trickle down and rumble on like distant thunder heading your way.

“I felt I was on the brink of a lot of things on this album,” vocalist Hayley Mary explains. “Youth and age, alternative and pop, giving up and pushing through.”  This crossroads in sound is most evident in Beat to Beat where thumping drums give way to a pure pop melody and even Mary’s vocals (a dynamic force of range and depth) invoke the pop aesthetic.

Intentional or not, a signature sound is evident through the evolution of their recorded output and this album should equally satisfy old fans and convert new ones. As The Jezabels mature into their expanding sound and they find a workable equilibrium between touring, creating and recording, their future should be shiny.
