THE MURLOCS NEW SINGLE ADOLESCENCE+ AUSTRALIAN TOUR

murlocs

After a sinfully busy summer spent touring with Mac DeMarco & Ty Segall while recording the follow up to their debut album Loopholes, Aussie Psych Sludge Rockers The Murlocs are very excited to announce  ‘Adolescence’ as the first single from The Murlocs’ second album which is due for release in June 2015!

According to vocalist Ambrose Kenny-Smith the new track is about,“Still experiencing puberty blues when you have well outgrown your teenage years. The mood swings of a 20 something dropkick”.

The Murlocs will be touring across Australia this April beginning in hometown Melbourne on Friday 3 April.

The Murlocs will release their second studio album in June 2015 via Flightless / Remote Control Records, with a confirmed release date, album title, and artwork to be revealed in the coming weeks

2015 National Tour
Summer rock favourites the Band of Skulls have just announced Sydney’s Spookyland as their support for 2015’s intimate run of club shows. Supporting frequent touring buddies The Black Keys’ at their Rolling Green concerts as well as a sought-after performance at Bluesfest, Band of Skulls’ Melbourne and Sydney show’s will be kicked off with the local indie rockers that Pitchfork labelled ‘utterly magnetizing’.

Spookyland last year released their EP “Rock and Roll Weakling” to sweeping acclaim from international press and local tastemakers. The moody and vulnerable vocals of lead singer Marcus Gordon soar across dark bluesy rock, with an underlying textured pop sensibility, that saw the band asked to play CMJ showcases and set off on their own tour of Europe. Back home, they have recently supported the likes of Cold War Kids, Benjamin Booker and now fellow unique rockers, Band of Skulls.

Returning to Australia for the second time in a whirlwind worldwide tour for their third LP “Himalayan” Band of Skull’s performances befit a band honed by two years of constant touring, as well as a memorable performance at the Splendour In The Grass music festival – their sun-kissed melodies sweeter than ever, their riffs heavier and dirtier…Now, after a year of perfecting their latest album on the live stage, a string of high-profile shows across the UK and Europe the trio offer Australian audiences another chance to see them live.
They are ecstatically received, and encore The Devil Takes Care of His Own is a fantastically barbed and carnal grunge odyssey that packs a visceral punch.”
- The Guardian UK on Band of Skulls

“An enviable confidence that will hopefully carry him far and wide as a vocalist, producer and performer…”

- NME on Spookyland

Review – Mazes – Wooden Aquarium

Artist: Mazes
Album: Wooden Aquarium
Label: Fatcat / The Planet Company
Date:   October 3 2014
Rating: 79/100

mazes wooden aquarium

This is my first foray into the world of British band Mazes, but judging by what I’ve heard online, they have matured brilliantly on their third outing.

For whatever reason, the band found themselves in New York, recording with Parquet Courts producer, Jonathan Schenke. It was winter, they had some of their gear stolen on day one, they had to dig through snow to get to the studio and it was all done in two weeks.

You wouldn’t know it. What they have produced is shiny, snarly psychedelic pop of a high calibre. Guitarist Jack Cooper, drummer Neil Robinson and bassist Conan Roberts do well in a studio environment, creating an album that wears its Krautrock & Psychedelic influences like great big smiley face badges while delivering Indie rock and fuzz straight to your face.

There’s a sense of relentlessness’ about this one, like the trip’s running out, or maybe hasn’t kicked in yet. Either way, tracks like openers Astigmatism & Salford and later in the album, The Letters Between U & V (album stand out track for my money) and Mineral Springs give you the feeling this is a band that is hound like in hunting down the sounds they want, then onto the next scent. They don’t linger.

They still manage time to throw in some Britpop era bliss via Stamford hill and an uncanny channelling of Egyptians era Robyn Hitchcock on Vapour Trails and while they let their wig out most on RIPP, tracks like Explode Into Colours and The Third Ridge still have enough residue to pique the interest of Leary’s ghost.

Overall I found this album hard to take out of the CD drawer, the best slice of psychedelic pie I’ve had this year. My biggest gripe with the album, we didn’t get a big enough slice. Let’s face it, at 32 minutes, it’s a bloody fast high.

Gruff Rhys Super Furry Animals frontman March 2015 Tour

Popfrenzy are welcoming Welsh indie icon Gruff Rhys back to Australian shores next year for a selection of shows promoting the Super Furry Animals frontman’s newest solo work, American Interior.
gruffrhys01
Welsh rock’n’roll troubadour Gruff Rhys has explored many boundaries of the musical form. Through nine albums with Super Furry Animals, two with Neon Neon (his project with hip hop producer Boom Bip) and handful of solo LPs, Gruff Rhys has distinctively documented the lives of others and set their stories to pop music heavily seeped in timeless melody and wide-eyed wonder.

Proud to highlight his Welsh heritage, American Interior explores the tale of a distant relative, John Evans – a fearless Welsh explorer travelled the Americas in the late 1800’s in search of a lost tribe of native Americans that fascinatingly shared is mother tongue. The resulting record is a jolly romp that borrows from traditional Americana sounds but is not completely lacking the familiar, off-kilter Super Furry Animals’ influence (hear the computer generated, sung completely in Welsh, Allweddellay Allweddol).

For new listeners and diehards alike Gruff Rhys has covered all bases for the release of American Interior with an accompanying book, mobile app and feature documentary to compliment the record. To supplement this he will be appearing in life on stages in Melbourne and Sydney and also playing Womadelaide throughout March 2015.

TY SEGALL ‘$INGLE$ #2′ TO BE RELEASED AHEAD OF AUSTRALIAN TOUR

Ty Segall has announced the release of his second collection of the year, $ingle$ 2, which will be launched on November 21 via Spunk Records.

2014 ain’t done yet, $ingle$ 2 is here. And this time, it’s for the money. Two times! As all of the ears that have heard what Ty Segal’s been putting out for the past five-ish years already know in their tiny l’il ear-brains, our kid’s got any number of places that he’s coming from, and putting them all into his rock and roll music is what he’s all about. Which is cool. $ingle$ 2 sweeps out the ashes of the breakneck days (and nights!!!!) of 2011–2013, and burns down the house all over again in the process — but not by accident. Sorry…

Covering The Groundhogs, the Velvets and GG Allin, Ty reps for a good array of punk godheads too. Between the covers and the originals, $ingle$ 2 is also a run through the SF 388 scene circa 2010–2013, with various local heroes like King Riff, Mike Donovan and Ty himself at the board.
